"Burnin’ Up" — Live from Saturday Night Live (2019)

There are live performances that feel polished, and then there are performances that feel alive. This one sits somewhere in the middle–but leans heavily into energy, nostalgia, and pure stage chemistry. Watching “Burnin’ Up” performed live again feels like stepping back into my 5-year-old self, fully obsessed with them all over again.

I found this performance through TikTok because someone posted that it was turning 15 this year, and ever since then, this performance has stayed on repeat for me!
Like, how could you not be obsessed with this?! The instrumentals when Joe opens with “I’m hot!”–BAM! “You’re cold!”–BAM! When the band punches back in right after the line really gets me every single time! The timing scratches something in my brain perfectly.
Joe really gets me, I fear. Watching this genuinely made me fall in love with him all over again. I guess.. once a Joe girl, always a Joe girl!
Honestly, this performance just reinforces that 5-year-old me sleeping with a Jonas Brothers CD beside my bed because of my love for Joe was absolutely the right decision. Because HOW did this man glow up even more?!
Okay.. this is slowly turning into a Joe obsession post now haha!
Though Nick’s “red dress” here is admittedly a little weak compared to other performances, it's still iconic regardless. If I had to critique anything in this performance–as the greatest singer alive obviously–it would only be that part, because everything else is genuinely perfect to me.
The vocals are amazing too. I definitely didn’t know they have game like that now! The stage presence, the attitude, the chemistry–it’s literally their energy that made this song addictive in the first place.
And Kevin looked SO cool playing the guitar here. As I got older, I developed a huge appreciation for his contribution to the band. I remember when I was a kid–as we all know, I was a huge Joe girl–but my mom kept insisting I should have a crush on Nick because he was the youngest, and I was young.. which… I still don’t know how that logic made sense, as if I had a chance with any of them lol.
But every time my mom did that, I’d be like, “Well.. why not Kevin?” Very rebellious kid response honestly. But weirdly enough, that conversation made me feel bad that nobody ever really picked Kevin as their “crush” as much as the other two, so I made a very conscious decision to force myself to have a crush on him.
That did not last very long, though, because.. Joe! haha!

The opening of the “Burnin’ Up” part of the performance! The tight band timing, the energy spikes, just everything! They performed that song like it was a science. Every pause, instrumental hit, and transition, chef’s kiss!
I also love that this performance didn’t try to reinvent “Burnin’ Up.” Instead, it reintroduced the song with confidence and fully leaned into the nostalgia. It’s less about proving anything and more about reminding everyone why the song worked so well in the first place.
And bringing it back on SNL years later didn’t just feel like another live performance–it felt like a revival moment, reconnecting older fans to the newer era of the band.
I guess some songs don’t really age.. they just wait for the right moment to come back louder.
