Some songs become hits, and then some songs become actual cultural events. “Baby” wasn’t just my introduction to Justin Bieber–it was basically the world’s introduction to him too! One day, this random kid with a side-swept haircut was just singing on YouTube, and now the entire planet is collectively losing its mind over him. Love it or hate it, this song practically raised a generation and launched one of the biggest pop stars of all time.

Baby
Artist: Justin Bieber ft. Ludacris
Album: My World 2.0
Year: 2010
Certified Belieber since 2010! Ask my mom!
But are we even surprised that I’m a Belieber? I genuinely think having a massive crush on Justin Bieber growing up is a canon event for most girls in our generation. I mean, come on! A guy who could sing, dance, and look good?! The odds were already stacked against us lol!
Verse 1
You are my love (Yo), you are my heart (Uh-huh)
And we will never, ever, ever be apart (Yo, uh-huh)
This part of the first verse felt so cool to me when I revisited this song as a teenager because I remember hearing that line again and immediately overanalyzing it because if she’s “a part” of him, then they physically can’t be “apart” since she’s his heart.. like she’s literally a part of him!
My mind was blown when I noticed that wordplay and created this whole deeper meaning to it lol.
Verse 3
When I was thirteen, I had my first love
There was nobody that compared to my baby
And nobody came between us nor could ever come above
She had me goin' crazy, oh, I was starstruck
She woke me up daily, don't need no Starbucks (Woo)
She made my heart pound, and skip a beat when I see her in the street and
At school on the playground, but I really wanna see her on the weekend
She knows she got me dazin', 'cause she was so amazin'
And now my heart is breakin', but I just keep on sayin'
I remember memorizing this rap part when I was a kid. I didn’t have my own phone back then, so I would have to print out the lyrics of my favorite songs and memorize them that way!
And honestly, being able to do this rap felt like one of the biggest accomplishments ever to little me. The moment I could finally keep up with it without messing up, I genuinely thought I was the coolest person alive because wow.. I can rap now haha!
Favorite !
Oh, for you, I would've done whatever (Uh-huh)
And I just can't believe we ain't together (Yo, uh-huh)
And I wanna play it cool (Yo), but I'm losin' you (Uh-huh)
I'll buy you anything (Yo), I'll buy you any ring (Uh-huh)
And I'm in pieces (Yo), baby, fix me (Uh-huh)
And just shake me 'til you wake me from this bad dream (Yo, uh-huh)
I'm goin' down (Yo), down, down, down (Uh-huh)
And I just can't believe my first love won't be around, and I'm like
This is my favorite part of the song, mostly because I just love singing it. Growing up, whenever I performed for my mirror, I would get so excited waiting for this part and sing it with my whole heart like I had just gone through a breakup (I absolutely did not lol).

“Baby” is such an iconic song! It takes me right back to those subdivision parties where I’d literally stop in my tracks at these parties whenever the MV came on the screen, fully hypnotized by Justin haha! My friends and I would even make up dances or randomly sing it while playing outside. It’s one of those songs that instantly brings me back to being a kid again, and yeah.. I still find myself wishing I could go back sometimes. But I guess that’s the sweet part of growing up–those moments stay with you, and every now and then, music lets you visit them again for a bit.
