“TV” — when escapism becomes emotional distance

!!! a small warning before you read: this post touches on depression, dissociation, self-destructive behavior, ED-related themes, toxic relationships, and mental health. “TV” feels like scrolling through your own emotional timeline and realizing you’ve been dissociating to stay alive. Billie Eilish turns numbness and quiet heartbreak into something almost conversational. It’s the kind of song that sits with you in the silence and somehow makes that silence feel way too loud.

TV

Artist:  Billie Eilish

EP:  Guitar Songs

Year:  2022

This song really highlights Billie’s voice. It strips away the production-heavy layers we’ve come to associate with her and leaves us with just her vocals and an acoustic guitar–and it’s exactly that simplicity that makes the song cut deep. There’s nowhere to hide in it. Every pause, every breath, every quiet line feels exposed in a way that makes the heartbreak feel even more intimate.

Verse 1

I don't wanna talk right now

I just wanna watch TV

I'll stay in the pool and drown

So I don't have to watch you leave

It really captures that phase after a breakup where you slowly self-destruct–not intentionally, but through dissociation and quietly letting yourself go. There’s something so ironic about the line not wanting to talk, because you do talk.. to yourself, replaying everything over and over, trying to make sense of the hurt. And then there’s the TV itself–this form of escapism, something to fill the silence so you don’t have to sit alone with the heartbreak.

Some people might call it dramatic, but when you’ve truly loved someone with your whole being, heartbreak really does distort everything. You start feeling like you’d rather take any other kind of pain–stay in the pool and drown, anything–just so you don’t have to experience the specific ache of watching someone you love.. leave.

Verse 1 (cont’d)

I put on Survivor just to watch somebody suffer

Maybe I should get some sleep

Sinking in the sofa while they all betray each other

What's the point of anything?

This part of the song honestly reminds me of Rue from Euphoria lmao. That same kind of depressed, bed-rotting state, where she just endlessly watching Love Island.. because.. same.

There’s something weirdly comforting about hearing a song acknowledge that phase after a breakup where you just kind of rot in one spot in your house. That in-between stage where you’re too emotionally exhausted to face the pain, but unable to escape it either. So you distract yourself with reality TV or anything at all, just to avoid sitting alone with your thoughts. And eventually, you hit that point where you stop and ask yourself: what’s the point of anything?

And then there’s the line about Survivor, “to watch somebody suffer.” I do agree with Billie’s observation there that a lot of the appeal of these shows doesn’t really come from watching people succeed–it comes from watching the drama and seeing people struggle, fail, embarrass themselves, break down. That’s why the line works so well–her own pain feels reflected and amplified through watching suffering become entertainment.. which I think some of us can relate to.

Chorus

All of my friends are missing again

That's what happens when you fall in love

You don't have the time, you leave them all behind

You tell yourself, "It's fine, you're just in love"

Some people interpret the first line as Billie shifting the blame onto her friends, but the way I see it, it sounds more like her thoughts fighting each other in real time: they abandoned me… okay, maybe I abandoned them.. okay, maybe not exactly, I just fell in love

And honestly, I know that we know what that feels like–that distance that forms between you and your friends once you get into a relationship, whether it happens naturally, intentionally, or because the relationship itself starts isolating you (don’t ask me which one I relate to..). Billie tries to reassure herself by saying she’s “just in love,” but it feels more like someone trying to justify what they’ve lost in the process of loving someone.

Verse 2 (excerpt)

I'll try not to starve myself

Just because you're mad at me

This landed painfully close to home. There was a point in my life where I would deliberately starve myself whenever we’d fight or when he was mad at me, almost like I was trying to punish myself for whatever went wrong. I didn’t even fully understand what I had supposedly done–I just carried this constant feeling that everything was somehow my fault.

And I think that’s one of the saddest things this kind of relationship can do to you: they slowly train you to turn the hurt inward. Instead of questioning why someone is treating you badly, you start questioning yourself first.

Verse 2 (cont’d)

And I'll be in denial for at least a little while

What about the plans we made?

That’s part of a breakup too, right? Not just grieving the person, but grieving the future you both planned together. The little things you imagined, the version of your life that only existed because you thought they’d still be in it. And I think that’s what makes moving on so difficult sometimes–you’re not only letting go of someone, you’re also letting go of the life you thought you were building with them, the version of yourself that existed with them, and the future you genuinely thought was going to happen.

Maybe I'm the problem

Maybe I, maybe I, maybe I'm the problem

Baby, I, baby, I, baby, I'm the problem

I love this part so much because I’m a sucker for repeating lines over and over again just to drive a feeling home (you can probably tell from my other song reactions/reviews here on my blog).

What makes it even more interesting to me is the shift from “maybe” to “baby.” At first, it feels uncertain, like she’s still questioning it. But by the end, it hardens into something more definitive–less doubt, more acceptance. It’s like she finally stops negotiating with the idea and just sits with it.

I read it as self-blame for self-preservation.. maybe self-awareness that’s painful but necessary–almost like naming a problem is the first step in trying to survive it.

“TV” circles around Billie’s desire to escape from her feelings and the aftermath of a relationship ending. But instead of dramatic outbursts, it captures something quieter and honestly more devastating: emotional numbness, avoidance, and that strange disconnected feeling where you’re hurting deeply but can barely process it in real time.

It reflects that uncomfortable moment of realizing how much of yourself you’ve lost in certain situations–but also how that awareness slowly becomes the beginning of finding your way back. And maybe that’s the quiet encouragement in it: while going through pain, there is still, and will always be, room to understand yourself with more softness, and eventually, to grow out of that version of you.
