“Lover” — the kind of love that feels like coming home

I used to think “Lover” was just a cute love song. Then I got older, fell in love for real, started discussing the future, and arguing, and suddenly this song became terrifyingly realistic. Beneath all the romance and glitter is something much softer: the choice to keep choosing the same person over and over again. Which is very sweet, very beautiful, and frankly a little embarrassing for someone who spent years pretending they were emotionally detached, until I met someone worth choosing.

Artist:  Taylor Swift

Album:  Lover

I wanted to give this song its own yap session because my mom found out my tattoo of this song! She knew I was getting one, she just didn’t know how many I ended up getting.. I think that is enough reason for this song to get its own blog post lol.

Verse 1

We could leave the Christmas lights up 'til January

And this is our place, we make the rules

And there's a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you, dear

Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years?

As someone who loves Christmas, this part immediately caught me, the opening notes alone already make my heart soften. It turns something so mundane, like putting up Christmas lights, into something intimate and shared. Even the small question of “when do we take them down?” suddenly becomes, “eh, who cares? we make the rules!” It’s such a simple line, but it captures how love quietly bends everyday life into something a little more personal when shared with a loved one.

And I think that’s also what makes this part hit deeper. When you’re in love, time starts to feel weird.. you can meet someone recently but somehow feel like you’ve known them forever. It’s disorienting in the sweetest way–like familiarity isn’t built on time anymore, but on connection.

Verse 2

We could let our friends crash in the living room

This is our place, we make the call

And I'm highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you

I've loved you three summers now, honey, but I want 'em all

That line: “this is our place”.. It genuinely makes me all soft inside! Because isn’t that kind of the goal when you’re in love? Building something that feels shared and safe, like a home that belongs to both of you. A space where even the rules feel relaxed, where friends can crash and it’s just, “who cares? it’s our place!” There’s something really comforting about that kind of emotional ownership–not possessive, but grounding.

I know that feeling too well, where loving someone makes you almost proud of them in a way that feels external, like other people should automatically see how special they are too. And at the same time, you get a little protective.. not because you want to hide them, but because you start realizing how deeply you care about what they mean to you.

And the last part? I loved mine for 5 summers now, honey, I do want ‘em all too :)

Chorus

Can I go where you go?

Can we always be this close?

Forever and ever, ah

Take me out and take me home (Forever and ever)

You're my, my, my, my lover

To anyone who has ever been in love, I think you’ll recognize this feeling immediately: the way you’d rather be wherever your person is, and how even short moments apart can feel like torture. There’s this pull that makes distance feel bigger than it actually is, like time slows down when you’re not together. And honestly, that’s what makes this chorus so beautiful–it captures the comfort, the longing, and the way someone’s presence starts to feel like home.

Favorite !

Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand?

With every guitar string scar on my hand

I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover

My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue

All's well that ends well to end up with you

Swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover

And you'll save all your dirtiest jokes for me

And at every table, I'll save you a seat, lover

I love how this part feels like something straight out of a wedding ceremony–like the officiant is about to announce two people stepping into forever. There’s something so intentional about the way Taylor uses “guitar string scar on my hand” too; it makes the whole song feel personal to her, as she has played guitar since she was a little girl.

And I could honestly yap forever about how this connects to her other songs, but what really gets me is how I’ve already imagined this playing at my wedding one day. The “ladies and gentlemen” part? In my head, that’s when everyone will be dancing with us (as I envisioned this song as the first dance song). aaaa my hopeless romantic heart, be still!

This song means so much to me that I literally tattooed it at the back of my neck. That’s how permanent it feels in my life. I even call my boyfriend my “lover” because of it!

At the end of the day, "Lover" is one of those songs that reminds me how soft love can be when you let it. It’s not about perfection, but presence. And I think that’s what I want to keep holding onto–for myself, and for anyone reading this too. Let yourself believe in soft things. Let yourself dream a little too big. And don’t be afraid of how deeply you feel things.. sometimes that’s exactly what makes life beautiful.
