Going through a WilldaBeast phase as a kid was really something! I was genuinely convinced that within a few years I'd somehow be attending one of his classes, and through sheer determination, become part of that whole dance world lol! The delusion was strong haha!
I feel really sentimental about this one because Lil Beasts (minus Kenneth, aw) and Kaycee Rice recreated this choreo 4 years after the original 2014 version!
I remember watching the 2014 video for the first time and immediately thinking, “I really want to learn this, but yeah.. this is too advanced for me.” So I basically told myself that I’d learn it if I get a little bit better at dance, which, spoiler alert.. I never actually learned it haha! And now it’s kind of funny because they’ve already recreated it, and I still haven’t learned it to this day.
I was like a kid in a candy store, feeling like this was a completely different world from what I was used to, and I think that’s what intimidated me back then. My younger self made me believe I had to be “better” at dance first–like I needed to perfect at one thing before trying something new, which is very Type A of me, and also very dramatic haha!
That original video was also where I got introduced to a lot of dancers I ended up admiring, and where I developed a very obvious crush on Sean Lew lol. It was also my introduction to Kaycee Rice and Delaney Glazer–true girlboss energy from the start.
I remember being so obsessed with Kaycee Rice in that video! Her technique, control, and how clean everything looked at such a young age really made me think, “I want to dance like that.” It’s also the reason I’ve always said that if I ever have kids who want to dance, y’all already know! I’m going all in as a supportive mom haha!
Side note: in the 2014 version, there’s a funny moment at around 1:17 when the lyric “you can’t trust these hoes” plays and someone in the background just yells, “NO YOU CAN’T!!!” lmaooo! I find that so funny every time!
Watching the 2018 recreation 4 years later made me really emotional. Seeing how much everyone had grown just made me realize how long I’ve actually been following their journeys too. There’s something really special about watching your biggest dance inspirations evolve in real time.
Looking back.. I think what made this phase so memorable wasn't just because of the dream–it was how much it expanded my view of dance. WilldaBeast’s choreographies felt completely different from what I was used to. They were different musically, in style, bigger, harder, and a lot of floor work! But I do love the challenge; it made me want to become a better dancer.
But yeah.. that era introduced me to an entire community of dancers I would spend years looking up to. It shaped my taste, influenced my style, gave me new goals to chase, and made dance feel so much bigger than the little world I knew at the time. And honestly, for a kid learning choreographies in front of an old computer screen, that felt pretty magical : )
